Collection: Indie Rock

Indie rock and the colored vinyl tradition grew up together. When independent labels in the 1980s and 90s couldn’t compete with major-label budgets for marketing and distribution, they competed on the object itself — colored pressings, hand-screened covers, inserts, and packaging that made buying the record directly from the label feel like participating in something rather than just making a purchase. That instinct is where a large share of the most collectible colored vinyl in existence came from.

The indie rock vinyl in this collection reflects that history and continues it. You’ll find records from the American underground and the British independent scene, noise rock and emo and post-rock and every other substyle that fell under the indie umbrella during the format’s peak years for collectibility. Small pressing runs are the norm here — many of these records were pressed in quantities of 500 or 1,000, which is part of why they’re worth collecting now.

Contemporary indie rock on vinyl is also well-represented, with many current independent artists and labels continuing the tradition of thoughtful, limited pressings that reward the collector who pays attention.
